Nokia 9000 - Expert Review

There few very good comments about Nokia 9000. I found it very interesting comment by Rob's Digital Life on May 22nd, 2007. He said "Nokia 9000 communicator is a huge beast of a phone, the modern trend of mobiles getting smaller and smaller is certainly bucked here. First impressions are its size and the large directional antenna. The phone weighs in at a bulky 397grams by today’s standards, but then it does boast an impressive internal workings".

Although too pricey but a good seller in Finland, where mobiles are more common than they are here in the UK. Phone parts is very similar to the nokia 5.1, except the menu such as the message option requires you to enter the answer phone number before calling to get your messages with extra options including broadcast message. Its memory uses the phone contacts database as the default, as opposed to the SIM card phone book. Ear Piece and Microphone according to Bob are on the opposite side to the screen and keyboard, which takes time to get used to. He realised that Help key to be in the wrong place, when ever he reached for the backspace key he ended up pressing the Help key.

Nokia 9000 has no function to highlight text, copy, paste text. The OS is Geoworks, which was chosen for his ability to deal with all the Internet functions. When in the hands free mode, the caller can be heard quite clearly but he does not recommend to be used in the car, as the mic would be too far away and pick up lots of background noise, and the speaker would be too quiet.

To use Data and Fax you need to have a data and fax enabled sim card. Using “Fax” allows you to both send and receive faxes. SMS function is ahead of the other phones for composing short text messages, he found it joyful to use. As you type the message, the number of characters is counted and is shown on the screen, which helps a great deal.

Internet Key allows you to surf the web, send emails and to Telnet and turn the 9000 into a Terminal. Thus Bob said sending and receiving mail is easy. It was reasonably slow but the 9000 does only run at 9600. Seriously, the 9000 is not designed to be used to surf the web all day, but purely a tool for gaining text information of the web. The Contact Function is important to the operation of the nokia 9000. This allows to offer you the fax number when you address a fax to a contact. Notes makes a useful tool for writing small notes and small articles. Diary function allows you to make to-do lists, enter appointments and then set alarmsto remind you. Extra Function is where you will find the option to compose your own ringingtone.

He summarised Nokia 9000 communicator "as a revolutionary product, a definite first of it’s kind. The introduction of the 9000i which amongst other things can handle virtual servers, send email in the same online session as receiving. To sum up a wonderful product with a few rough edges such as the diary, but I'll defiantly miss it".

The Saint starred Val Kilmer as a kind of do- gooding, freelance James Bond. He was with-it and wired: A spiffy, and pricey, Nokia 9000 Communicator let him make wireless phone calls, use e-mail and get onto the World Wide Web. Hollywood can make anything not only look good but perform well - even information appliances.

In reality, Nokia users complain about the screen, which isn't backlit, and they say the sleek little device is, simply put, slow. In the real world of corporate computing, these things matter. Real-world demands, for now anyway, make information appliances toys rather than tools.

I sumarise their comments as the following - In term of Audio Playback, "Nokia 9000 does not come with an MP3 player. It is not equipped with a camera or a video recording function thus not capable of accessing the Internet, due to the limitations of GPRS access. There is no MMS capability and lacks the modern ability of t9 intelligent text messaging causing us to text messages much longer.
